Creation of Benue State
Benue state was created on February 3, 1976. It was one of the seven new states created by the military administration headed by the late General Murtala Muhammed, which increased the number of states in the federation from twelve to nineteen. The state derived its name from the River Benue which is the second largest river in the country and the most outstanding geographic feature in the state.

In 1991, several more states and local governments were created. The Igala-speaking local governments were excised to form part of the present day Kogi state. Presently, Benue state has twenty-three local governments, with the Tiv speaking area having fourteen while the Idoma-Igede area has nine local governements.

Election of George Akume
Upon return to civilian rule in Nigeria, the 1999 Benue State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on January 9, 1999. The PDP nominee George Akume won the election, defeating the APP candidate. George Akume defeated Mike Mku and others to win the PDP nomination at the primary election. His running mate was Ogiri Ajene.

Ortom was elected governor of Benue State as a member of the All Progressives Congress in 2015, though later defecting to the People's Democratic Party. He was re-elected as governor on 29 May 2019.
